Abstract A method for the asymptotic description of one of the mechanisms by which fluctuations develop in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow at high Reynolds numbers is proposed. The class of wave perturbations of comparatively high amplitude which obey the linear Korteweg-de Vries equation despite the general non-linear multistage asymptotic structure of the flow field is indicated. The evolution of a localized perturbation and its conversion into a wave packet is considered.
