Abstract A mathematical model of the large deformations of materials with elastic, plastic and viscous properties is proposed. Non-linear viscous properties develop during deformation preceding plastic flow and, on unloading, in the form of creep of the material and, during its flow, in the form of viscous resistance to plastic flow. The rheological mechanism of the healing of a solitary continuity defect under conditions of cyclic operational loads of the "loading-unloading" type is explained as an example.
